I am just as much a sheep as everyone else, but I fight it all the time. I don't know if it has done me any good over the years to fight the tide of consumerism or not. I've spent a lot of time frustrated or pissed or both.
Then under it all, and sometimes over it all, I am stuck with the thought that the intentionally ignorant deserve the dark, dank hole they willingly dig at the mere suggestion that they really need to dig the hole. We are in the grips of mental illness epidemics that are caused entirely by the constant bombardment of "something is wrong here and if you just buy our product or vote for our candidate it will all turn out peachy."
We don't seem to want out, either. All it takes is critical thinking. That's it. Teach that in our schools. Won't happen. Only fringe private schools manage to pull it off. It won't happen because critical thinkers are excellent consumers -- that is, they consume a lot less. They are not as easily swayed by subtle and not so subtle advertising.
And critical thinkers are more likely to check their facts before acting. And that includes their own assumptions, opinions and conclusions.
It would take a major overhaul of our school system. Serra High School, for instance, would have a 100% turn over in faculty because nobody at the school seems to have a clue about anything.
Really. It doesn't take much time at all to convince someone they are broken and require products and services to fix themselves.
Yes. I am in the midst of another round of "people suck" and I intend to wallow in it for a bit.
