The social fabric of humanity is composed of sets of beliefs. Yes, there are biological drivers and primate ways of being. Those are the basic blocks on which we have built several complex structures. Everything we hold as moral, for instance, is just another complex structure built on the survival of our primate troop. All our beliefs that are based on right/wrong or good/bad are entirely made up.
This is good. We can examine each of our beliefs and discard those that fail to provide anything in our lives.
But, we aren't likely to give up all our beliefs. I, for instance, have no plan to give up a few cherished beliefs even though those beliefs are sometimes in the way.
Here, then, is the rub. We can get as transcendental as we want, but the social fabric of humans is not going to change much. The struggle between differing points of view will continue.
I watched a NOVA last night about the Dove School Board suit of a couple of years ago. Creationism (Intelligent Design) v. science. I realized that the battle will never end. I listened to a news story on NPR yesterday about the Right to Life group endorsing some candidate. I realized that the battle will never end.
It is does not matter what I believe as much as it matters what other people believe I should believe. And I realized the batter will never end.
Too bad I don't enjoy the battle.
I believe reason will never win. I believe there are no winners.
I believe I'm tired.
