It has a built-in water heater and tank that holds one pot of water.  To make a pot of coffee, one pours a full pot of water into the top and hot water immediately flows through the grounds into a waiting pot.

The cold water going into the top can't mingle with the hot going out or it would become tepid.

My burning question of the day:  What keeps the cold and hot water separate?

There is only one way to find out. Take it apart!
