Adobe provides a file format called "fdf" which can be used to fill pdf forms created for Acrobat Reader 6.  Except that I can't seem to get it to work for checkboxes.  Text fields fill in just fine.  I need checkboxes, too.

Newer versions of Acrobat use a file format called xpa which is xml-ish.  Much easier to use! But I can't seem to use it with the forms I need to use it with.

I think I need to go back to the "give up on using Adobe products".

I need a way to take information from a database and put it in the right place on a piece of paper.  More than than, I need the ability to let the end user update the layout of that piece of paper.  And I would love to do this in Linux.

I may be asking for way too much.
