With a clean pool filled with fresh water, I can conduct a series of experiments. The pool is a dog leg with the hot tub at one end and the deepest part at the other end. The pool makes an extra wide turn at the knee.
I measured the chemistry in the hot tub, in the pool next to the hot tub, at the mid point off the outside arc and at the deep end. Basic chemistry was the same at each point.
Then the recirculation pump ran for eight hours. This pulls water from the deep end (bottom drain and skimmer) and runs the water through a filter and chlorine injector back to the hot tub. The hot tub over flows back into the pool. All the added chlorine starts in the hot tub (which is normally at pool water temperature).
This afternoon I tested the water again at the same four locations plus the location of the chlorine float. The chemistry was the same throughout the pool except for the chlorine numbers.
In the hot tub and at the float the chlorine was at the high end of the correct range. The pool near the hot tub was at the low end of correct. The center of the arc barely changed the color of the litmus paper. The deep end had no detectable chlorine.
This is BAD. The water movement pattern in the pool isn't causing much of a mix.
I can see that this will require a talk with the pool guy.
