I've spent the day trying to restore a M$crosoft XP machine such that Stacey's dad has very limited ability to screw things up again.

One of the things I've discovered is that XP really, really hates it when you won't let it connect to the Internet. I mean it really hates it.

I have only further intensified my dislike of gui admin tools in general. There are a tiny few I use on my linux machine. A few more I use on Stacey's Apple box. But I greatly prefer the command line for administrative work.

I installed printer drivers and discovered that I couldn't JUST install the driver (at least not the way I went about it). I had to install a whole bunch of HP software first. And HP really, really wants me to be connected to the Internet, too.

This machine came with small business M$ office. And it's all installed from the "protected" restoration directory. BUT-- and it's a big butt -- I need the key to unlock office. I'm hoping we find the key at Sam's house. It's not looking good.

Now, though, is the time to look through the kitchen to see what I'm going to make for dinner tonight. Hmmm. I think I'll start some brown rice now.

Love.
