There is the meaning given by astronomers and other scientists. And that is interesting enough for me on it's own. I like to visualize the planet and the sun such that our seasons are created. I don't spend much time on why it is as it is.
It is interesting.
Cultures that are based closer to the polls than the equator have added meaning for Solstice. The sun and Moon figure in many religions and spiritual practices, but the lengthening and shortening of the day only figure where this is significant variations.
I have given them meaning in my spiritual practice. I have borrowed from other traditions to some degree, but in my shamanistic practices, I have created something a little different than most.
Suffice to say that the Winter Solstice is the ending and beginning of my spiritual year. This is the time of spiritual renewal for me.
For several months I've experienced a strong desire to journey. I can feel it's pull on me daily. And I have resisted. There are questions to bring to non-ordinary reality. Answers I long to have and fear to have.
This week, I will journey. Depending on timing, it is likely to be tomorrow. I'll have to find the right question from the list. The question that will really untie the knot I've had in my stomach for quite some time.
In any event, this, the longest night of the year, is my time. it is the day on which I most often feel at my best -- calm, peaceful and generally happy. This is a day in which love always takes the prize. So it has been for as long as I can remember in my adult life.
Blessed be. May the fortunes of your year turn aways in your favor. May the loves in your life return measure for measure. May peace be the path you walk, honor the banner you carry and love your quest.
Love.

When we are children we are working as hard as we can to make enough sense of the world so we can be become an adult. As we get older, we leave that quest aside.
Mature quests are more about untangling the misinformation in our lives and creating an individual path. I think it is the natural progression and what is often called elder wisdom.
The first step seems to be to put fear into prospective so that it is possible to move into an "enlightened" state. Fear is all that stops us from transcendence.
The questions one asks from midlife on are a lot bigger than the questions asked by a 15 year old. And if we aren't too resigned or too cynical, we will ask them eventually even if only under our breath.
