Finally have all the computers running -- and running well. Even my LJ client (logjam) compiled correctly. Yay!
Here's what the problem (probably) was. The kernel updates where installing the right version, but the wrong build. It appears that some of the rpms upgraded the kernel for multiprocessor computers even if it replaces a single processor kernel.
Some machines ran with that kernel, others choked. And it looked to all the world like a problem with the boot loader.
All is well.
I know what to do next time. Next time (if there is a next time (like when I update my laptop)) I will check the symlinks and sue the correct kernel. Yay for correct kernel.
Love.
