The death toll is at 55,000 and is still increasing from the quake and tsunami in the Indian Ocean. We will have thousands more secondary deaths, I'm sure. It takes time to get enough relief supplies to get them to their final destination. Disease will surely follow. "Rescue" workers are finally getting into Sumatra, the island closest to the 9.0 quake. It's been leveled.
This is a huge natural disaster. And it is the scale that is the story, not the quake itself or the tsunami.
In Southern California right now, the rain is falling in dangerous amounts. We will experience flash floods in all the usual places.
Our planet is constantly handing us disasters big and small. There is nothing to do to stop them. Only to do risk assessment and prepare for what is likely in the near future.
We will mourn the deaths of so many to this natural disaster as we mourn the deaths from previous disasters.
When will we think war is a disaster?
