I have a plan.

I want to play Riff once more, maybe the 8th, before I take on learning something else. I'll play Riff as often as I can, though. Right now, he is still my favorite.

Then I'm going to start on rules. I should be able to knock that out in a month. [livejournal.com profile] pdi is on the list to clear for rules. That will help.

Then I'll work on Brad. It will take less time than Riff. Not that Brad is easier -- it isn't -- but because I have more confidence. I'm still tweaked a bit about floor show.

What I find really interesting, though, is my reluctance to play any of the women. I can come up with a thousand reasons why I'm not learning them. But none of them hold any water at all. I suppose that I should take on one after Brad. Magenta, I think. I'm just not a Columbia or Janet type. :)

I'm not sure I could ever pull off Frank, either.

I'll probably learn the part, though, eventually. If I'm going to stay with this cast for a long time, I should know all the roles well enough to fill in if needed. And sometimes, it is important.

Nicole, where are you?

And do you think LBJ is a Janet or Columbia type? And what about me? I have absolutly NO business playing Columbia, yet I do, and so does LBJ.

Don't let 'types' keep you from learning parts.

Not a body type issue. It's more a mental issue. I don't even like Columbia. And Janet goes from timid virgin to full out sex goddess. I can barely work up enough sexual desire for Elbow sex. How in the world could I pull off Janet. I'm not that good an actor.

Enlighten me.
Is it common for cast members to be expected to learn every last part in the show? I know people usually play more than one role, but is it really necessary to learn all of them?

Varies by cast. Many casts lock a person into a role and provide understudes. In those casts, it is unusual for someone to know more than two or three roles.

Crazed Imaginations, though, doesn't do that. We sign up each week for the next weeks show. If a cast member has been cleared (demonstrated that they know the part to one of the designated folks) to play a part, they can play it.

Right now, we have nearly 40 people in cast and we still have some roles that only a couple of people play. And stuff happens at the last minute. Without designated understudies, it is important for cast to have maximum flexibility.

There is no requirement that I learn all the parts. If I have three that I do really well (Dr. Scott, Riff and Brad are the one's I'm planning on), it is enough. On the other hand, it won't hurt to learn more.

And it will add life to the party if I'm working on learning more and improving what I already play.
