I was talking with a man today about his life. He's a teacher of high school aged students in a program for "high risk" students. He's married and has two daughters. He is utterly cynical about life. He has moments of wonder and fulfillment in his classroom but the rest of his life is wearing him down. He knows what he wants. He sees no way to get it. He hasn't mentioned it to his wife or his daughters.

During the conversation he said when he can step back, he has a good life. But he added that he forgets that in the day to day struggle.

I asked him whose measuring stick was he using for the good-life appraisal. I watched a light-bulb go on over his head.

I completely love my life. I know what measuring stick I'm using. It's mine.

Love is a good thing. Life is a good thing. Family is a great thing.

Love,
Lynn
