From the time I was old enough to think in political terms I've shifted my point of view countless times. I started out as a Democrat because that is what both my parents were. Working Stiff, Yellow Dog Democrats. I shifted to Republican after the 1968 convention. I shifted back when Richard Nixon ran for president the second time. I have shifted away from both.
The Republican Party (aka the Evil Party) has been in the game of what can the federal government do TO you. The Democratic Party (aka the Stupid Party) has mostly played what can the federal government to FOR you. In both cases, they are busy selling snake oil and the American People are busy buying.
The Democrats have just pushed through a Health Care Reform package. Most Democrats voted for it. No Republicans did. It is a huge bill that will do little to control the cost of health care and nothing to improve the delivery of health care in the US. The Evil Party had nothing to offer except to limit liability of providers. The Dems had some good ideas but they sank to the bottom of political ignorance within weeks of being announced.
The evil party plays the fear trump card as quickly as they can when the Dems present a plan of any kind. They get the Ultra-idiot network thrumming a party line. The Dems have no ability to counter it.
The stupid party believes that a rational, intelligent, thoughtful approach to America's issues will win out. Not a chance. We are still in the grips of anti-intellectualism in this country. Even while we insist that every child has a right to a college education (that someone else pays for), we are also insisting that no child receive an actual education. "Just the facts, Ma'am." Never mind exercising critical thinking skills. Nope. Can't do that. And lets have a zero tolerance policy on thinking like we do on everything else a young person might want to do.
The evil party believes that the government should give all the support requested to businesses as long as it never hits the news media. The stupid party believes that the powerful and wealthy will do the right thing.
We have the government we deserve. We have the government we elect. We have the best government money can buy.
