And computers are a complete mystery. ;)

I have finally managed to get postfix/postgresql/courier-imap/virtual-domains/web-mail working. I am very, very happy about this. I kludged together several HOW-TOs then went back through and brought sanity to the way postgres was being used.

Now, though, I want to use an authentication method for users to be able to use my mail server as an outgoing smtp server. Once again I am trying to kludge several HOW-TOs together and I'm getting NO PLACE.

The issue? I'm running Postfix in a chroot jail. That means I'm having trouble with cyrus-sasl. I know there is a way to do this. I know it. :) I think I have to compile it rather than use the rpm package. I don't think it was built with courier-authdaemon support. And that is the only way I see around the chroot jail.

Yep. Another puzzle. Only this one can wait.

The first thing I want to do is get all the virus/spam checking in place. I think with the new system, we can provide individual users some control over the spam filters. That means a lot of spam will be rejected at the server. And I am THRILLED about that. Almost all the mail handled by my mail server is spam. And it pisses me off!

Love.

I left the show early last Friday (just after dinner scene) because I was too tired to walk and think at the same time. But I did my duty to the show by signing up for three things on the board and handling a couple of things I hadn't signed up for. Being the backup for prop movements is a good thing. :) And I won't be at the show next week because of a planned trip. I rarely miss shows. A few more in the last six months than is my usual habit, but very few over all. I also get that my schedule is a lot more flexible than some folks.

All that said, I do not understand how we can be so sort handed on show night. Even if we allow that one only has to be at two shows a month to be in good standing, that means that we should have half the cast at most shows at a minimum. There are some obvious exceptions to that. But generally we should have close to 20 cast members at the show. 11 performing (Trixie, Eddie, Rules and Rev are short parts, too). That means there ought to be 9 or so working bodies to cover lights/props, and security.

I haven't been playing close attention, but it doesn't seem like we have 20 at a show. Maybe I'll start counting the crowd at the cast meeting. I might be imagining that we have a shortage. I know that I hear "we are short of cast" often. We do seem to be short of players.

Also, we are rebuilding the "who can clear" list. It's yet another crack at getting a system for training and approving our cast members to play parts. A couple of years ago, I was on the list to clear for Dr. Scott. But I took myself off the list. Our cast director, after a cast leadership meeting, wrote some questions for people to use to submit themselves to be on the new list. I wasn't going to submit my name.

I was asked to. I thought about it for a long time. It was not an easy decision. I decided I would submit my name. I sent off my requests.

And finally, I'm thinking about adding another part. A couple of people have suggested the Criminologist.. But he doesn't call to me at all. I'm thinking of Brad. But I'm not going to put any effort into learning his peculiarities until I am comfortable with kickline. Soon I'l start working on that. I can't even see what the characters are doing in that dance so it will be difficult.

Time is fleeting....

I have seen two of the movies nominated for best picture.

One of the movies was okay. I liked the people mostly even when they were doing REALLY STUPID THINGS. But the movie was so slow that I couldn't stay engaged in the story. I was bored for most of it. And I expect this movie to win.

The other I thought was just a crappy movie. If I had seen it in a theater, I would have felt like I wasted $9.

I haven't even heard of the other 3.

I've noticed a slow shift in my point of view in the last 15 years. Most of the human drama that movies tend to deal with bores the living shit out of me. It's the same drama as 30 years ago and it did interest me then. But there is very little left that seems like a fresh look at human sexuality, relationship tragedy, the ups and downs of daily human life.

The last movie I saw that dealt with it in a way that was interesting to me was American Beauty. Before that was Moulin Rouge.

I'll just stick to SF, pure escapism and musicals. I'm not in tune with the normal Hollywood output any more.
