I've been noodling the notion that one can tell what someone wants in their life by looking at what they have. It's really a powerful idea. And it's one I've believed for many years without having such a short way of saying it.

I have to be careful about it, though. I can easily give up my compassion under that philosophy.

When I think of this concept, I am always reminded of this wonderful Eleanor Roosevelt quote: No one can make you feel inferior without your consent.

When this interpretation empowers me it is because it allows me to see who I've been being and whether that is consistent with my values, passions and the self I am inventing myself to be. Generally there is a large inconsistency which gives me a chance to respond creatively. So I too find this notion useful and empowering.

I've heard people use the same notion as a way to invalidate themselves (occasionally) and others (frequently), so it is useful to repeat Werner's bottom line: When a supposedly enlightened teaching/coaching/princple/etc. is not empowering someone, it's nonsense.

One of the great things about my life is that I am empowered easily and often.

Love,
